Lakes, Steam and Fells Coach Trip

Date of Walk: 28/09/2002
Mountains Climbed: -
Length of Walk: 1 miles
Starting Point: Glenridding (for walk) Grid Ref:
Route: Coach to Settle, train to Carlisle, coach to Ullswater

After June's trip to Grasmere, I was expecting to have to wait until January before seeing the fells again, but David had booked us on a surprise weekend coach trip to Cumbria, which encompassed a couple of rides on steam trains along the way, and a trip to Glenridding.

Although there would not be time for any fellwalking, it was a great opportunity to visit the Lake District again, and the views are always wonderful, regardless of whether you are on high or low ground, and having some steam railways thrown in was an added bonus.

Our first stop of the day was Settle, where we would ride on the Settle to Carlisle railway to Carlisle.

We arrived in Carlisle just in time for lunch and a walk round the town.

We looked at the Castle, but decided that there was not enough time to look round it properly, so this would have to wait for another day.

We did, however, manage a quick look around the Museum, where I was delighted to find quite a lot of information about the town from the time of the Civil War, a period of history which I am particularly interested in.

Then it was back to the Railway Station, where our coach was waiting to take us to Glenridding.

After a scenic trip along Ullswater, we arrived in Glenridding, where the others on the coach headed for the local teashops and the Lake shore, while we took the opportunity to do some mini-fellwalking.

From the car park we followed Glenridding Beck , then climbed up the lower slopes of Birkhouse Moor where we had some good views of Ullswater before it was time to return to the coach.
