On the final day of our Cloudberry Walking Holiday, we left Borrowdale Youth Hostel for Seathwaite on a morning which had started out with low cloud, but which was clearing by the time we set off.

From Seathwaite we climbed up the path at the side of Sour Milk Gill. This took us between Base Brown and Brandreth, our route back later in the day. The path is very steep at the side of the gill, and requires some scrambling, especially when you are not very tall! We had a break where the path splits, with the left fork taking you to Base Brown's summit and the right fork taking you to Green Gable.

I would have liked to climb Base Brown but some of the others were travelling home that evening and did not want to extend the walk, so we turned right as planned towards Green Gable and slogged our way up the last climb to reach the summit.

Nigel had promised that we could use the lunch break at Green Gable's summit for an extension to Great Gable, but the mist started coming down, and he was unhappy about splitting the group up, which we accepted, so we had lunch with the others and before long we were in cloud with very poor visibility.

After lunch we walked to Brandreth.

The visibility had improved a little, but the cloud soon came back down.

At the relatively rounded summit plateau of Brandreth as the cloud came down, Nigel set us a little task which was to guess (without taking bearings) which direction to start walking in towards Grey Knotts after we had stopped for a break. We were all surprised at how disorientating the mist was and another valuable lesson was learnt as none of us were confident of which direction we had come from, let alone which way we were going.

Of course, Nigel knew where we were and got us safely to Grey Knotts, by which time the mist had lifted again.

From Grey Knotts we followed the wall, then diverted our course to take a look at the Plumbago Mines before dropping down to Honister Hause and Seatoller, from where we followed the footpath back to the Youth Hostel.
