The second day of our walking holiday with Cloudberry saw us setting off in the direction of Rosthwaite, from where we climbed up Pudding Stone Bank to the hamlet of Watendlath. Here we stopped for a drink before taking the steep zigzag path up above the tarn. After pausing for breath, we set off towards Blea Tarn.

After Blea Tarn, there was no longer a distinct path, and much of the ground was boggy. We learnt a valuable lesson here in that until this walking holiday we would never have dreamt of planning a walk where there was no path listed, but we realised, by walking with an experienced leader, that by reading our map properly and taking bearings to ensure we were heading in the right direction this was not always necessary.

The weather was not unpleasant, but certainly not as good as the day before, and the mist kept coming and going. By the time we reached Ullscarf, the visibility was quite poor.

But we stayed on the summit for a while to have a bite to eat and the mist lifted again, allowing us to refer to our Wainwright guides to try to identify some of the surrounding summits.

From Ullscarf we walked to Greenup Edge, then followed the path down by Greenup Gill.

From here we made our way back to the Youth Hostel via Stonethwaite.
